Food Stamps

Las Vegas Food Stamp Program

The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services in the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services is responsible for the food support program for the state, SNAP. Since Nevada has the highest unemployment rate, it’s a concern that paying rent in order to have a place to live and being able to afford food often competes with each other. As a result, the SNAP program is created to ensure that low income families and individuals can still have access to the food they need in order to maintain a healthy and nutritional diet. Some families are able to receive benefits within 7 days, although most people receive their benefits within 30 days. The benefits are provided on a Nevada QUEST Card, which is basically an EBT card. To find out more information, individuals can go to the links provided below.

Having the correct information is one of the most important aspects of the application process. The application requires information about your identity, income, assets, and other related aspects. You will need this information during your application and later on when you are given an interview. You can download and print the Application for Assistance that is provided on the Division of Welfare and Support Services website. You will also need to provide your immigration or citizenship status and your social security number. The application generally request the birthdates and names of everyone who may be present in your household as well. You will also be granted an interview to verify any information.

In order to have access to benefits, you have to comply with the eligibility requirements for the state, which are based on household and income. If you are a worker on strike, you will not be eligible for benefits. If you have a family of four and you make less than $2422 per month, you are likely to qualify for food stamps. A chart is provided on the Nevada Department Website which explains these aspects in more detail. Individuals are allowed to have assets up to $2000. If there is an elderly or disabled person in the household, they can have $3200 in assets instead. The items that are not included in your assets include personal effects, income producing property, house, lot, and household goods. Vehicles, checking and savings accounts, and other related items are considered to be assets. If you meet the qualifications you will receive your Nevada QUEST card in the mail along with your approval letter, which provides you with further information on using your benefits.
