Food Stamps

Omaha Food Stamp Program

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services maintains the food stamps benefits program for the state. This program is known as SNAP. There is also another food support benefit program known as the Food Distribution Program and is used for underprivileged households. The USDA donates various types of food to the agencies that are in the food distribution program, including schools, summer food services, charities, and child care agencies. SNAP is a state and federal program for food assistance and is used for low income people and their families. In Nebraska, a household can be defined as a group of people living together or one individual. If groups are living together in the same house they have to buy their food separately or combine the benefits into the sum of one household. Husbands, wives, disabled persons, and children under the age of 22 are considered to qualify as one household. You can learn more about the various regulations by browsing the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services site.

Applications can be filled in and sent electronically through the ACCESSNebraska site. This is the online portal to various benefits in the state. You can use the site to begin with a self screening to let you know if you would be eligible for receiving assistance or not. You can then proceed with an online application afterward. If you want, you can download the application and then print it out so that you can turn it in to a local office or fax it. When you are on the ACCESSNebraska website, you can click “Enter in English” and then select the option “Online Assessment” to find out what programs may be able to help you. Alternatively, you can click the “Complete an application for DHHS Benefits” link to focus on your application instead. You can also use the website to report any changes to your situation and update your information.

You are only going to receive benefits if you are eligible according to the household and income requirements for the state. Although some people are eligible on these elements, they do not qualify for benefits because they are on strike or have other factors which inhibit them. There are specific guidelines which are used to determine the requirements for families and all aid is provided on a situational basis. If you have four people within your household and you are making less than $2422 per month, you are eligible to receive food stamps. However, the maximum amount of aid that you can receive for a household of four is limited to $668 per month. If your application is approved, you will be provided with an EBT card that has benefits on a monthly basis for use anywhere that SNAP is accepted.
