Food Stamps

Detroit Food Stamp Program

The food assistance program in Michigan is provided by the Department of Human Services. The department is responsible for determining the eligibility of those who are participating in the food assistance program. Those who have these benefits are provided with an EBT card that allows them to purchase food at locations that support SNAP benefits in the area. The program was specifically created to help low income individuals be able to afford food for themselves and their families so that they do not have to substitute paying for their rent or bills in comparison to being able to provide meals. You can learn more about this program and what it has to offer by visiting the website for the Department of Human Services.

Individuals can apply online by using the MI Bridges portal that is provided by the Department of Human Services. They must create and account and click the “Apply for Benefits” link that is provided. You can start an application and return to it later when you have the required information, which includes your income, social security number, resource information, and the size of your household. You may have to provide information about those who are living with you within your household as well. A mandatory interview follows after this application, which is a period where you prove the information you provided and give more details about your circumstances. This interview may be conducted over the phone, if necessary, or you may participate in it by going to the local DHS office in your area. You may be asked to provide scans or copies of certain documents to prove that your identity is correct and that you have verified the claims that you have made during your application process. Afterward, you will have to wait for a response in the mail. You can check the status of your application on the MI Bridges website. You can also call a representative and have them fill out an application for you over the phone.

The largest determining factor of whether or not someone is going to be able to get benefits is found in their income. Factors that also determine this point can include citizenship, assets, employment, child support, expenses, and additional points. You must be a resident of Michigan and have your citizenship within the country. There is a limit to the amount of assets that you may own and your countable income is also factored in with your rental income, veteran benefits, SSI, and other factors. To check for your eligibility, you can use the Michigan Assistance and Referral Service which is linked on this page. When you have been approved, you will receive an EBT card and information about your monthly benefits. You can report any changes regarding your situation by using the MI Bridges portal site or contacting the local DHS office in your area.
